Overview
Currie Community High School is a new, highly energy-efficient secondary school designed to Passivhaus standards. New Energy was appointed to design and install a 134.85 kWp solar PV system, maximising on-site renewable electricity generation while working around a complex flat roof containing extensive building services and plant.
THE PROJECT
The Challenge
The school’s flat roof presented a complex design environment, with extensive mechanical plant, ductwork and other rooftop services creating restricted areas and potential intermittent shading. The challenge was to maximise usable roof space and renewable generation without compromising building services, access requirements or system performance.
HOW WE DELIVERED
The Solution
New Energy designed and installed a 134.85 kWp solar PV system using 310 Canadian Solar 435 W modules across approximately 825 m² of roof area. A SolarEdge system was selected to help manage the impact of intermittent shading from rooftop plant and services, allowing module-level optimisation and improved system visibility. The installation also incorporated SolarEdge safety functionality, with the array mounted using a Van der Valk flat-roof system selected to suit the building design.
THE OUTCOME
Results
The completed installation provides 134.85 kWp of on-site solar generation capacity and forms part of the school’s wider low-energy, Passivhaus-led design strategy. Despite the complexity of the roof, the final layout makes effective use of the available space while maintaining access around rooftop services. The SolarEdge solution also provides module-level monitoring and optimisation, helping support long-term system performance and ongoing visibility of the installation.
