PROJECT OVERVIEW
Overview
Hillthorn Business Park is one of the North East’s largest speculative industrial developments, comprising around 600,000 sq ft of modern industrial space alongside the A19 in Washington. New Energy delivered a 1.04 MW solar PV installation across seven buildings, supporting the development’s drive for lower operational carbon, improved energy efficiency and high environmental performance.
THE PROJECT
The Challenge
Delivering more than 1 MW of solar PV across seven separate industrial buildings required careful coordination with the wider development programme and individual roof constraints. Sustainability was central to the scheme, with Hillthorn targeting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ benchmark, while the installation also needed to reduce operational energy demand and carbon emissions across a large industrial estate.
HOW WE DELIVERED
The Solution
New Energy designed and delivered a 1.04 MW solar PV solution distributed across seven buildings, with individual systems ranging from 57 to 159 kWp. During planning, concerns were raised over using cranes to land large quantities of panels directly onto the roof membranes. The installation methodology was therefore adapted, using a MEWP to transfer panels in smaller quantities and reduce the risk of membrane damage while maintaining safe, controlled installation across the development.
THE OUTCOME
Results
The completed installation provides 1.04 MW of renewable generation capacity across Hillthorn Business Park and is expected to reduce annual carbon emissions by approximately 186 tonnes. The solar PV forms part of a wider energy-efficiency strategy that also includes LED lighting and high-efficiency heat-pump air conditioning, helping reduce reliance on grid electricity while supporting the development’s long-term environmental performance and operational efficiency.
